For a first visit to Gangneung, spend one day around Ojukheon, Gyeongpo and Chodang. Add Jungang Market and Anmok Beach when you have a second day. With only an afternoon, choose the market-and-coffee route instead. That leaves time to enjoy the coast without spending most of the visit moving between beaches.
This Gangneung travel guide is for independent visitors arriving by train and using local buses or taxis. The two routes below have different strengths: one combines a historic house, a lake and the sea; the other keeps the afternoon focused on food and a café by the water.

The time allowances start after arrival in Gangneung, not when you leave Seoul. Choose your return train before adding an evening meal or another coastal stop.
Getting from Seoul to Gangneung
The Korea Tourism Organization describes the Seoul–Gangneung KTX journey as about two hours. Search KORAIL’s official booking site for your date, select Gangneung as the destination, and compare the actual departure station and journey time on each result.
For a day trip, reserve both directions before filling the hours in between. A late arrival followed by an early return suits the market and Anmok better than a museum, a lake walk and two beaches. Our Seoul Station guide explains the KTX departure area and the connection from the airport railway.
At Gangneung Station, arrange the local journey to your first stop rather than treating the station as the start of a continuous coastal walk. Save the destination in Korean: 오죽헌 for Ojukheon, 경포해변 for Gyeongpo Beach, or 안목해변 for Anmok Beach. Leave any large suitcase at your accommodation only after confirming that it can hold bags before check-in.
Local buses: fares and finding the right direction
The city’s bus-information system lists the ordinary adult fare as KRW 1,530 with a transport card or KRW 1,700 in cash. T-money is among its accepted prepaid cards. The separately listed seated-bus service has a higher fare.
Tap the card when getting off. Eligible transfers are available within one hour, up to twice, but reboarding the same-numbered route is excluded. For a group, separate cards avoid the restriction that gives only one person a transfer discount when several people share a card.
For Gyeongpo, look up 202 and 202-1 in the official timetable and route search. Both are listed as loops beginning and ending at Gyeongpo Beach, so compare the stop sequence and boarding direction, not just the destination on the front of the bus. The first and last times in the timetable refer to the route’s starting point, not every stop along it.

Start the full day at Ojukheon
Ojukheon is an early-Joseon house and the birthplace of the scholar Yulgok Yi I, with museum exhibitions that add context to the historic buildings. It gives the day a cultural stop before the coast. Put it first because admission ends earlier than your beach afternoon needs to.
Allow about 60–90 minutes for the house, grounds and selected exhibitions. History-focused visitors may want longer. The museum’s own visitor page gives the following regular arrangements.

The holiday distinction matters: entering the grounds is not the same as getting into the museum rooms. Before a holiday visit, read the notices on the museum homepage. On an ordinary day, an earlier start also lets you sit down to lunch without watching the admission clock.
Gyeongpo: choose a lake walk, then head for the sea
Three similar names can send you to different places. Gyeongpo Beach (경포해변) is the seafront, Gyeongpo Lake (경포호) is the lake, and Gyeongpodae (경포대) is the pavilion on a small hill beside it. The official pavilion listing gives its address as 365 Gyeongpo-ro and lists admission as free.
After Ojukheon, choose the pavilion and a short lakeside section rather than automatically committing to a complete circuit. About 30–60 minutes is a useful allowance for this part of the plan. Set your next destination before walking so you can finish on the side that suits lunch, rather than retracing the entire route.
With a wheelchair or stroller, compare the approach to the hilltop pavilion with a lakeside outing. A scenic stop reached by steps may add little to the day when the shore is the part everyone can enjoy. Make Chodang your lunch stop
Chodang is the area to look for 초당순두부, the soft tofu associated with Gangneung. The Korea Tourism Organization’s account of Chodang tofu describes both a mild version and a spicy shellfish preparation. A tofu dish is not necessarily vegetarian, and the broth and side dishes deserve as much attention as the main ingredient.
Choose the meal you want before joining a queue: a mild tofu dish and a spicy seafood version are quite different lunches. Ask whether the menu price is for one person or a shared order. Keep the break to roughly an hour unless the restaurant is the main reason for your trip.
Then continue to Gyeongpo Beach for the longer seaside part of the day. Leave the afternoon open for a walk and a rest instead of adding Anmok simply because it is another famous beach. Save Anmok for the second day when coffee is something you can sit down to enjoy.
For the second day, pair Jungang Market with Anmok
This is also the simpler choice for a short first visit. The Korea Tourism Organization pairs Jungang Market and Anmok in a food-and-coast route. Take the same two anchors without trying to include every beach farther along that itinerary.
Eat at the market before heading to the coast
Gangneung Jungang Market is at 21 Geumseong-ro (금성로 21). Its official tourism listing gives general hours of 08:30–21:00, varying by shop. Visit around a meal rather than arriving near closing for a particular stall.
Allow 60–90 minutes to look around and eat. Choose one main dish or a couple of smaller purchases, then decide whether you still want dessert at Anmok. Ordering everything at the first crowded stall can leave you carrying food rather than exploring the market. Save room in your bag for anything you buy before the journey home.
Leave room for a proper coffee stop at Anmok
Anmok Beach is the roughly 500-meter beach beside the seafront coffee street. Save 안목해변 or 강릉커피거리 in your map app. Coffee Street means this area by Anmok, not every well-known coffee roastery in Gangneung.
Pick a café for the coffee, seating and view you actually want. A rooftop is not much of an advantage when the wind makes it uncomfortable, and an upper-floor view is only useful when you can reach the seating area. For a relaxed visit, set aside about 90 minutes to two hours for coffee and a beach walk.
The beach walk and swimming have different operating conditions. Anmok’s tourism listing separates beach access from its summer swimming hours. Treat this as a sightseeing plan, and follow the seasonal notices and on-site restrictions before entering the water.
Before settling into a second drink, check the journey back to the station and set a time to leave. The local ride, any luggage collection and finding the platform all come before your train departs.
Is an overnight stay worth it?
Stay one night when you want both routes without cutting the museum visit or coffee stop short. Choose a place near Gyeongpo when a morning beach walk is the priority, or look downtown when the market and evening meal matter more. Compare each hotel’s entrance with your actual evening plans, not only its distance from the railway station.
For a late arrival, ask about check-in hours before paying. For an early train, find out how checkout and getting a taxi will work. Moving hotels for a two-day visit usually adds another luggage task without giving much extra sightseeing time.
Give Jeongdongjin its own time
Jeongdongjin is a separate coastal outing, particularly for travelers coming for sunrise. The tourism organization’s overnight route puts the Jeongdongjin area on a different day from Ojukheon and Gyeongpodae. Follow that principle rather than adding it after a full afternoon at Anmok.
For a sunrise visit, choose a nearby overnight stay or arrange the pre-dawn journey first. Do not assume the first available train or city bus will arrive early enough. If Jeongdongjin is your main interest, use it in place of the market-and-Anmok day.
A few decisions before you book
Can I visit Gangneung without renting a car?
Yes. These routes can be planned with local buses and occasional taxis. They work best when you stay within the chosen areas rather than trying to visit every part of the coast. Use the city’s route search for the connections on your travel day.
Can I see Gyeongpo and Anmok in one day?
Yes, by making them the day’s two main stops and allowing for the journey between them. To add Ojukheon, a lakeside walk and the market as well, stay overnight or remove something. For a short visit, choose Gyeongpo for the lake-and-beach combination or Anmok for coffee by the sea.
What should change when it rains?
On the heritage route, spend longer in Ojukheon’s exhibition rooms when they are open and shorten the outdoor walk. On the Anmok route, choose indoor café seating and an easier ride back. Leave the lake circuit or another beach for better weather.
Before leaving Seoul, save your train ticket, first destination and hotel entrance offline. Once in Gangneung, keep the day centered on the visit you chose: history and the lake, or market food and coffee with a sea view.
