To take a taxi in South Korea, use an available street taxi, a marked taxi rank or a booking app, then show the exact destination and confirm how you will pay. A saved Korean address helps more than trying to pronounce a hotel name. With an app, match the assigned license plate before boarding.

At the curb: look for an available car
In Seoul, 빈차 means vacant and 예약 means reserved. The city’s taxi guide explains these windshield signs. Read the wording rather than judging availability only by the roof light.
At a station or busy shopping area, a taxi rank gives you a clear place to wait. Away from a rank, stay on the sidewalk and choose somewhere a driver can pull over safely. Have your destination open on the phone before the car stops. If there is already a queue, join it rather than trying to flag a car in front of the waiting passengers.
An app is a useful alternative when the pickup is complicated or you want the destination entered before meeting the driver. It is not necessary for every short ride. When a suitable vacant taxi is already beside you, a street hail may save the wait for an app booking.
Choose an app before you need a ride
k.ride: an option built for overseas visitors
Kakao Mobility’s k.ride service supports sign-up through Google, Apple or email and payment with overseas-issued cards. Its interface includes English, Japanese and simplified or traditional Chinese, with translation for destination searches and driver messages. That makes it worth setting up before your first evening out.
Finish account and card registration while you have a reliable connection. Search your hotel to check that you have selected the right branch, but do not confirm a ride merely to test the app. When you are ready to travel, enter the pickup point, choose the vehicle, review the payment method and then request it.
App convenience can add to the meter price. The k.ride paid-service schedule lists a 10% service surcharge for its Korean Standard and Deluxe categories, with other charges depending on the service. Compare the total shown for your booking, not only the taxi’s base fare. The same schedule sets cancellation and no-show conditions; cancelling after a driver has been assigned is not automatically free.
Kakao T or Uber: use the account that already works for you
VISITKOREA’s app guide explains that Kakao T uses a Kakao account and describes a “Pay to the driver” option. Use it only when that choice is available for the ride you select. Do not assume every premium or reservation service has the same payment options.
VISITKOREA also lists Uber Taxi as an option for visitors with an existing Uber app and payment profile. Check the available service at your pickup location. For a ride booked in the app, keep the booking there: Uber’s Korea guidelines prohibit unauthorized off-app payment for app-initiated trips.
The useful comparison is simple: does the app accept your account and payment method, offer an appropriate vehicle and show a pickup you can reach? Having three apps installed is less helpful than having one account ready to use.
Make the pickup unambiguous
A request screen is not a car assignment. Wait for driver and vehicle details, then compare the arriving plate with the booking. If the car does not match, do not board it as though it were your assigned ride. Use the app’s contact or support option instead.
Choose a building entrance, not just a building. A hotel can have a pedestrian doorway on one street and a driveway on another. Stand at the pickup pin, and make any change clear to the driver through the app. Walking across a major road while the driver is approaching can turn a straightforward pickup into a missed connection.
For a large party, compare both seating and luggage capacity before requesting. A higher fare or the word “Deluxe” does not establish that a vehicle has room for more people. A child seat or space for a mobility device needs a specific arrangement, not an assumption based on the vehicle’s appearance.
After everyone is seated, fasten seat belts and keep the destination available on your screen. When you arrive, check the seat and footwell before unloading the trunk. It is easier to notice a phone left behind while the car is still beside you.
What a standard taxi costs in Seoul
The Seoul Metropolitan Government’s fare schedule lists the following base fares. They are not the complete price of an airport transfer or a cross-city ride.

During the daytime, the standard rate adds ₩100 per 131 meters beyond the base distance, with time charges of ₩100 per 30 seconds in low-speed travel. Distance and time can be counted together below 15.72 km/h. Traffic can therefore change the final fare even on a familiar route.
The night rows already include the surcharge in the displayed base fare; do not add the percentage to that base again. Nighttime distance and time charges also rise. Deluxe, large and branded services have separate schedules. The city’s Korean-language tariff page is another reference when comparing the service named in an app.
For budgeting, treat the displayed amount as an estimate unless your selected service explicitly provides a fixed fare. Review tolls, booking fees and any surcharges in the fare breakdown. A quote to one hotel is not a reliable price for every address in the same district.
Pay once, then keep the receipt
Korea Tourism Organization’s taxi guidance lists cash, credit cards and transportation cards as payment methods and says tipping is not required. Carry a backup payment method rather than assuming every foreign card will process successfully in every vehicle.
Before departure, decide whether payment will be handled in the app or in the taxi. If automatic payment is selected, check the trip’s payment status before also handing over a card. When a driver says payment has failed, look at the booking together or contact support; a second payment should not become your first troubleshooting step.
Keep the trip receipt or app record until you have checked your belongings and the charge. The useful details are the full plate, pickup and drop-off points, time, fare and booking reference. A screenshot of a pending card authorization alone may not explain the completed trip.
At Incheon Airport, use the correct pickup area
Incheon Airport’s taxi guide warns against unofficial solicitation and directs passengers to designated stands. For a trip toward Seoul, its current pickup references are:

These are pickup-zone labels, not airline gate numbers. For an app or reserved car, follow the booking’s terminal and meeting instructions, using signs or airport staff to confirm the location. Do not change from a booked car to a street taxi without dealing with the existing booking.
The airport’s joint operating arrangement means a qualifying taxi trip from Incheon Airport to Seoul has no boundary surcharge merely for crossing into Seoul. That does not remove applicable night charges, tolls or booking fees. Confirm whether you are selecting a regular metered taxi or a separately priced International/Smart Taxi service before comparing totals.

Use a precise address, especially after dinner
Save the Korean road-name address and the business name together. Check the city and branch before requesting a car: a restaurant name can lead to several results, while a neighborhood name is too broad for a useful drop-off.

First distinguish a posted night rate, toll or app fee from an unexplained charge. Questions before your first ride
Can I get a taxi without a Korean app account?
Yes. A street taxi or taxi rank does not require an app account. For app booking, k.ride offers the overseas-visitor sign-up and payment options described above. Set it up before you need an immediate ride.
Is a taxi fare charged per passenger?
A regular metered taxi charges for the vehicle’s trip, not a separate meter fare for each passenger. Stay within the vehicle’s permitted capacity. Tourist tours, private transfers and other booked products can use different pricing.
Is every taxi more expensive after midnight?
The exact rule depends on the location and service. For Seoul’s standard taxis, the higher period starts at 22:00, not midnight, and the largest surcharge is between 23:00 and 02:00. Use the Seoul table only for that category.
Does an estimate guarantee the final bill?
No. Read whether the booking is estimated, metered or fixed-price, and which extras it includes. Traffic, a changed destination or service-specific fees can matter. Save the fare breakdown rather than relying on a number remembered from the request screen.
Before the car leaves: correct vehicle, correct address, correct payment method. Those three checks prevent more confusion than memorizing every taxi brand.
