Seoul Station Travel Guide: KTX, AREX and Luggage

At Seoul Station, choose the train service before following an exit number. For KTX, head toward the main railway concourse. For the airport, follow AREX signs and choose Express or All-Stop. For a subway journey, follow your line number. Sharing a station name does not mean sharing a ticket or boarding area.

This Seoul Station travel guide covers those everyday decisions, along with baggage storage and choosing a nearby hotel. The aim is to get you to the right platform with enough time to spare, rather than memorize every floor of a large station.

First decide which train you need

Keep your reservation open while you enter the station. A destination such as Busan is useful, but the departure station, train number and departure time identify the service you have actually booked. Use the official KORAIL booking site for KTX reservations. Do not assume that every train leaving the city of Seoul departs from Seoul Station.

The AREX Seoul Station guide confirms connections with KTX and subway Lines 1 and 4. Its airport-rail layout places Express ticketing on B2, All-Stop ticketing and the Line 1/4 transfer passage on B3, and the airport-rail platforms on B7. These are landmarks on the AREX side, not a floor plan for every service in the station.

With a suitcase or stroller, choose the lift route before descending a long escalator. The station guide lists elevators, but an elevator symbol on one floor does not establish the whole route to your hotel or platform. Ask station staff for the step-free connection when you need it.

Arriving by AREX and continuing by KTX

Put the KTX ticket somewhere easy to reach before the airport train arrives. Once you are off the train, deal with the connection first; food and shopping can wait until you know your departure platform.

1. Leave the AREX paid area using the correct ticket or card. Keep it available until you have passed the exit gate.
2. Follow KTX / Trains signs toward the railway concourse. Follow the lift signs if you need them rather than copying the crowd onto stairs.
3. Match the departure board to your reservation. Check the train number as well as the destination and time, then find the assigned platform.
4. Check your carriage and seat before boarding. Keep the ticket available and ask railway staff when a platform change or unfamiliar notice is unclear.

For a first visit with luggage, our suggested booking margin is about an hour between the scheduled AREX arrival and KTX departure. It gives you room for the change of level, finding the board and a short delay. It is not an official minimum connection time, and it does not cover a delayed flight or a long immigration queue.

For example, if your airport train is scheduled to arrive at 10:00, looking for a KTX around 11:00 gives you more room than choosing one at 10:10. Those are example times, not a published timetable. When the journey starts with an international flight, build the plan from the time you can realistically reach the airport railway, not the aircraft’s scheduled landing.

From KTX to AREX: Continuing to Incheon Airport

After leaving the KTX platform, follow Airport Railroad / AREX signs. Decide on Express or All-Stop before entering its gate, and check your flight’s terminal before selecting the airport stop. A train’s arrival at the airport station is not the time you reach an airline check-in counter.

Keep the airline’s check-in deadline separate from the railway timetable. A faster train cannot recover the time spent waiting for it, and arriving at Terminal 1 does not finish a journey that needs Terminal 2.

AREX Express or All-Stop: compare the whole journey

The AREX Express runs between Seoul Station and Incheon Airport with assigned seats and a separate ticket. The All-Stop service also serves intermediate stations, including Hongik University and Gimpo Airport. The Express does not stop at those two stations.

*AREX notes that some All-Stop departures take an additional 2 to 6 minutes. The Express figures are the adult price displayed by the operator, not a promise that every sales channel or promotion has the same price. The All-Stop fare table adds KRW 100 for an adult single-journey ticket, plus a refundable KRW 500 card deposit. These figures exclude any separate onward journey.

Choose Express when the assigned seat and its departure time fit your airport trip. Choose All-Stop when you need an intermediate stop or prefer the lower fare. Compare the next departures before paying: the shorter train ride is not automatically the earliest arrival.

Leaving bags at Seoul Station

For staffed storage, T-Luggage’s official location information lists its Seoul Station branch on B1, along the direction from Exit 1 to Exit 2, with hours of 09:00 to 22:00. Use the branch’s location reference rather than assuming every station locker belongs to the same service.

Check the size category and collection time before paying. The provider distinguishes weekday and weekend rates, and longer storage adds charges. A listed branch is not a guarantee that space is available for every bag.

If your train leaves before 09:00, plan for your bags to be back with you the night before rather than assuming a staffed counter opens early. Save the collection receipt and a photo of the storage location. Walking back to the wrong part of a station can consume the spare time you thought you had.

Airport check-in is different from luggage storage

The Seoul Station City Airport Terminal is on the AREX side at B2. It provides check-in, checked-baggage and departure-clearance services for eligible same-day international flights from Incheon Airport. An Express ticket is required, and the airline and flight must qualify.

The operator lists check-in from 05:20 to 19:00, with reception ending at 18:50. The flight-specific cutoff can be much earlier: check-in must be completed at least 3 hours before a Terminal 1 departure or 3 hours 20 minutes before a Terminal 2 departure. Confirm your airline’s eligibility before buying Express solely for this service. It is not a general-purpose place to leave a suitcase and collect it after sightseeing.

Is a hotel near Seoul Station worth it?

It can be, especially when a rail departure is the fixed point of your trip. Compare the hotel entrance with the part of the station you will use, not just the distance to a pin labeled Seoul Station. An easy walk to a subway exit may be a less useful walk to the KTX concourse.

Before booking, ask the property which entrance it recommends with a suitcase, whether there are stairs before the lift, and whether it can hold bags outside check-in hours. For an early departure, find out how checkout works before reception opens. For a late arrival, save any door code and a contact method before the journey.

Choose another neighborhood when most of your evenings will be there and the train journey is only one part of a longer stay. A station-side hotel should simplify the trip you are taking, not win the decision because the word “station” sounds convenient. Before leaving the hotel, put your ticket, phone and wallet where you can reach them without opening your suitcase.

Do not mistake the old station for the KTX entrance

The red-brick historic building is Culture Station Seoul 284, a cultural venue in the former railway station. It is not the modern KTX boarding concourse. Keep that distinction in mind when choosing a meeting point or following photographs online.

With a long wait, the building can be a separate cultural stop, but check the current exhibition notice before expecting indoor access. The venue can close between exhibitions. During a short connection, settle for a meal after finding your platform instead of turning the transfer into an extra sightseeing itinerary.

Questions before a first Seoul Station transfer

Does my KTX ticket include AREX Express?

Do not assume it does. AREX Express requires its own valid ticket. Check the inclusions of any combined package; otherwise, arrange each leg separately and keep both tickets available for the connection.

Which airport train goes to Gimpo Airport?

AREX All-Stop serves Gimpo Airport. The Express is for Seoul Station and Incheon Airport, so it is not the service to choose for Gimpo.

Is an hour enough to change from AREX to KTX?

An hour is our suggested first-visit booking margin after the scheduled AREX arrival, not a guaranteed minimum. Allow more for assistance or delays, and do not measure that hour from an international flight’s landing time.

Can I collect stored bags at any time?

Not from a staffed branch with set hours. T-Luggage lists 09:00 to 22:00 for Seoul Station. Check your chosen facility’s collection rules, particularly before an early departure or a late return.

Before you leave for the station

Have the departure station, train number, terminal if flying, and both tickets ready. Add the baggage collection location when relevant. Once at the station, use the departure board and current signs instead of an old platform photograph.
